How to Prepare for an Interview
Preparation and research is essential to a successful interview. The first interview tends to be brief, therefore, you have limited time to express your qualifications.
Always: Research: Know the firm or corporation and the people you are scheduled to meet. Make notes of your research and review the day of your interview. This includes questions you have about the firm or company.
Prepare: Print several hard copies of your resume on good paper stock for your interview. Keep these in a folder so they stay neat.
Reflect: Think about what types of questions may be asked, and make notes of appropriate experience you have that may be of benefit to the firm or company.
Confirm: Always confirm the date, time and exactly where your interviews are to be held.
Plan: Know how to get to the interview – this is not the time to be reading a map! Leave time for delays and, in case of the unexpected, take the telephone numbers of the people you are scheduled to meet. Make certain your phone is fully charged.
Review: Review the names and positions of the people you will be meeting. Also review your own resume.
Impress: Even if you know they are “business casual,” you only get one first impression. Ensure you look like the partner or general counsel you hope to one day become.
Shut Down: Prior to entering the reception area, TURN OFF YOUR MOBILE! There is no acceptable excuse for this rule. If there is a family emergency, reschedule. If the potential employer doesn’t understand, you do not want to work for them.
